We are very excited to introduce our next pen in the Birds of the World series: The Eastern Bluebird by Dan Symonds. We are elated to be working with such a talented industry veteran. We first saw some of Dan’s work at the 2019 DC Fountain Pen Supershow and immediately knew we wanted to partner with him on a Birds of the World pen. We touched base with him again at the Dallas Pen Show and firmed up his participation during the Ohio Pen Show. He has selected his “Classic” model as the design to use and is awaiting our custom material which is being produced by Dan Cobler, of Provincial Mills. We have finalized the look of the material and colors which can be seen on our raw materials page.
For those unfamiliar with Mr. Symonds we include a section of his bio below and this link to pictures of some of his past work.
"I have been a machinist, manufacturing engineer, and robotics engineer, for 50 years in commercial and government industry. I have enjoyed the chance to grow my experience through exposure to a large pool of work experience. I started making pens in the early 2000's and moved my pen making toward implementing bas-relief carving and engraving as a part of the process. I developed several unique techniques for overlay and carving using cnc technology.
I started attending pen shows around 2006 with my independent work. Eventually I met Scott Franklin of Franklin-Christoph and we decided to work together to commercially produce pens in the US. I produced pens for the Franklin-Christoph line of fine writing instruments at my shop in Houston for 3 years then moved the shop to North Carolina. I spent four more years there overseeing product development and direct production before retiring. I am very proud to have been able to contribute to this fine American pen company and I salute their fine company and continued success.
I am now retired from the commercial side of fine pen manufacturing. I now currently reside in Houston, Texas near family and friends. I produce my own small line of custom crafted pens as an independent maker."
Dan is a wonderful person and artist working out of his Texas studio.
